Welsh musician Gruff Rhys has spoken out about the EU referendum with his latest single “I love EU”. The song, although partly political, is a funny parody of old love ballads. Rhys explained that the track is “basically just an attempt to make an emotional case for Mother Europe” (entertainment.ie). This is done effectively, as the seriousness of the referendum is contrasted in this single with humorous lines such as “when I met you, I’d never tasted pasta or baguettes”. However, it isn’t just one big joke. He does mention the good and bad points of the EU with simplicity, something I believe everyone is looking for. Gruff Rhys also clearly shows his musical background, with a solid electric keyboard track to accompany his lyrics. With all of the political jargon used by politicians on the news, its nice to see someone come out and say which way they’re voting in a way that everyone can understand, and is entertaining at the same time.
