Single Review – Feist – Century

Singer-songwriter Feist a.k.a Leslie Feist has teamed up with Jarvis Cocker (and Brian LeBarton) to produce forceful new single ‘Century’, the second taken from forthcoming fifth LP ‘Pleasure’ due for release April 28. ‘Century’ opens shimmering with conviction. Feist’s biting lyrics build a tension over stark instrumentation, consisting of ragged guitar lines and some prominent percussion. A song about living through bitter darkness, ‘Century’ encapsulates the hope that you might reach something better, or someone better; ‘Someone who will lead you to someone, who will lead you to the one at the end of the century.’ Everything begins to fade midway into Cocker’s drifting peroration, reminiscent of his spoken-word Sunday service segments and of course some classic Pulp. ‘Century’s close is as raw and abrupt as the severing of a relationship, leaving you hovering in anticipation of what may happen next.
