Single Review – NAO – Nostalgia

In true NAO style, the sickly-sweet eighties renaissance strikes again through mellow electronics and Neo Jessica Joshua’s falsetto pipes. New track Nostalgia – the first to arise since her 2016 debut LP For All We Know – oozes the colourful funk her other euphoric pop ventures, founded upon a funky bass and topped off by her distinctive sparkling harmonies. Nostalgia reaches its peak about 2 minutes and 10 seconds in, as the upbeat groove drifts and the key changes build. It adds layers to a track that could definitely be mistaken for being on For All We Know, since it’s disco ambiances are so similar, but adds a twist that keeps it fresh and exciting. And as the backing track is stripped away towards the end, the song becomes somewhat more reflective and vulnerable, as the incessant instrumentalism dies down and the lyrics take centre stage. I think, despite all the successes on her album, this is one of NAO’s strongest songs to date.
