Single Review + FREE DOWNLOAD – Owen Pallett – Phone Call

The Canadian multi-instrumentalist Owen Pallett from Toronto is known for his surrealist and abstract musical style and delivery and this new single for the Adult Swim singles presentation is no different. The man who produced 2014’s In Conflict sets his offbeat, theatrical vocal around soft-edged and drenching synths. The counter melody doesn’t always work throughout the whole song and perhaps would have been best used for only the sections of the song, but it’s aims can still be appreciated. This contemplative track is certainly worth a free download and was used as an opportunity by Owen to experiment vocally and that’s the crux of the track.

FREE DOWNLOAD – Les Bonbons feat Finn Andrews – Nouveau Depart

London/Parisian based band, Les Bonbons have recently unveiled a free download entitled Nouveau Depart, which features guest vocals from The Veils Finn Andrews. It’s a track that opens with rising, graceful strings before the isolated French vocals come in. They are soon accompanied by purposeful rhythms from the percussion and the rhythm guitar with flurries of clean and composed lead riffs firing through all the instrumentals. It goes on to fall into spaced and drawn out parts before being slowly ushered back up to speed through the vocals and the brass. The track then goes on to end at it’s most energetic and flourishing. A neat, nostalgic track. Their self titled debut album is out on November 17th

FREE DOWNLOAD – Cocoa Futures – Scotland

Just days after Scotland voted against leaving the United Kingdom and Scottish band Cocoa Futures have released a free download of their cheery and optimistic track entitled ‘Scotland’. As everyone splits themselves into the 45% or the 55% of those who voted; the campaign messages still apply. Unity and solidarity must win over against division and conflict and this track is a symbolism of that. The track opens with a warped chime and with simple percussion as the rapid lead riff flashes across the other instrumentals before glazing over the track with it’s wiry electricity for a basic, yet effective hook. The vocals are familiar and not overbearing. They give an added sense of warmth to hammer home the message of the song in that everyone in Scotland has something in common and that’s a wonderful thing. A message that could be applied to the whole UK too. I’ve made my feelings clear over the last few months as a socialist who believes that Scotland voting Yes was a contradiction of the very thing I am, but at the end of the day there will always be a place that we feel most proud to come from. For me it’s the North East of England. For Cocoa Futures it is Scotland and they think it’s great. It’s hard to disagree.

Single Review + FREE DOWNLOAD – Los Campesinos! – Little Mouth

Los Campesinos! - "Little Mouth"

The Welsh Indie collective return with a single to release in conjunction and as part of the soundtrack for the film Benny and Jolene. ‘Little Mouth’ was recorded and written before they set to work on last year’s No Blues and as expected; has a light hearted and airy flow and feel to it via more conventional means of instrumentation and only slight, yet effective production statements. The lightly churning guitars and shimming piano’s and tambourines are tied down and controlled by the sharp percussion. The vocal combinations sweep across the instrumentals with ease, calm and warmth and all in all it is nicely worked track which rewards you more for the feel and energy of it rather than it’s workings and method. They are playing the Truck Festival today as well so check them out if you’re there and if you can’t, then get this song as a free download for you to swoon your summer afternoons away.
