Really Good Remixes – Florence + The Machine – Queen of Peace (Hot Chip Remix)

Here Hot Chip have done what they do best and rejigged Florence’s How Big, How Blue, How Beautiful track ‘Queen of Peace’ from the brass tinged, catchy tune that it is, into a more angular, dark electronic affair. In doing so they insert pulsating drum samples which rise and fall in severity. In front of these, they leave Florence’s soaring vocals untouched and isolated against the sonic backdrop and maintain the power of the song. Two accomplished acts working well here.

Hot Chip – Why Make Sense? Review

Hot Chip have been making waves with their latest album, Why Make Sense?, which sees the band cutting back to a somewhat simpler sound. They seem to favour more subtle electronic sounds in 2015, allowing lyrics and key riffs to take focus rather than swamping our ears with complex layers as per their previous style. And it works brilliantly.

The band have a wonderful technique of combining feel-good beats and cheerful dance music with slightly dark and ominous lyrics. They seem to utilise this on Why Make Sense? more than ever before, with questions such as ‘Why make sense when the world around us refuses?” and “Why be tough when strength is just for losers?” This album not only makes you dance but has you question love and life as a bonus.

Although Hot Chip are known for adjusting their style with each new album, Why Make Sense? seems to have subtle hints of various genres throughout. ‘Started Right’ has a fun R&B edge that brings Justin Timberlake’s ‘Senorita’ to mind, whilst the powerful vocals of in the sampled chorus on ‘Need You Now’ have a classic 90’s dance vibe which makes you want to hit the dancefloor. The pulsing bassline of ‘Easy To Get’ has an irresistible disco vibe, and ‘White Wine and Fried Chicken’ is a totally relaxed pop ballad with just a hint of electronica. There is no filler on this album; each track has something awesome to offer, making it must-listen for Hot Chip fans new and old.

Hot Chip – Why Make Sense? = 8/10
